In the modern-day scenario, a vehicle maintenance has transformed from a luxury into a requirement for most of us. Be it a two-wheeler or a four-wheeler, Isn’t it fabulous when you can eventually buy a bike or a car for yourself? However, before taking your loved ones out on a drive for celebrating, it is essential to get your vehicle registered, as per the laws set up by the Government of India. It should not come as a surprise that vehicles cannot run on roads without undergoing a complete documentation process.
Regional Transport Office a.k.a RTO is accountable for handling various responsibilities associated with the entire vehicle ecosystem. From driving licence to vehicle registration, RTO takes care of a wide range of aspects related to fleets and keeps a record for every vehicle running in the country. Regional Transport Office (RTO) also commonly known as the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has to maintain both the driver and vehicle database for all the states, hence there are many vehicle registrations offices in India to offer various operational services at ease.
It is obligatory to register the new vehicle with the Regional Transport Office. A temporary registration number is issued promptly, however, for a permanent registration number, a month’s time is at least required. The temporary registration number is valid only for a short period of time and only a permanent registration number is an indication of vehicle registration with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. It is important to know that you can not change this number in any situation and a re-registration is required if a person moves from one state to another through the local RTO.
Here are the steps for vehicle registration at RTO:
- A registration form has to be filled and submitted with other documents.
- A list of important documents includes vehicle sales certificate, invoice, form 20, owner’s photo, and identity proof.
- Both the form and documents are checked for approval by an inspecting officer.
- Once a registration process is completed, An Registration Certificate (RC) is issued for the vehicle.
- It is crucial to always keep a copy of RC while driving as it has all the information about the vehicle including registration number, chassis number, date of purchase, name of the owner, etc.
In case you are shifting from one state to another state with your vehicle for a longer duration of time, then you need to visit the local RTO in the new state to re-register the vehicle. For instance, if a person is moving out from Uttarakhand to live in Delhi, then RTO Offices in Delhi has to be visited for re-registration of the vehicle.
Here are the steps for the transference of RC from one state to another state:
- Visit the RTO office where the vehicle is already registered to deregister it.
- Get a NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the Regional Transport Office.
- Visit the RTO office for the new state with the NOC.
- Submit the applicable payment and complete the rest of the formalities.
- Once the process is completed, a new registration number is given for the vehicle.
