Foster Mental and Emotional Health in Your Child By Following These Steps

As a parent, sooner or later there comes a time when you have to face the fact that your child is approaching the young adult stage and will soon try their hands at potentially serious relationships. Well, that is not exactly a small realization to come to and may need some time getting used to. However, you know it is true, and you must make them understand what relationships entail and get them ready to take on the responsibilities that come with them.

You are still a significant part of your kid’s life, and now you must take charge of helping them step closer to a critical phase of their life. You may do this by talking to them, getting to know their best friend and talk to their roommates and so on. Interacting with your child is very important. No matter how strict you are as a parent, your child must know that you are there as a friend too and they can lean on you for support and turn to you for advice whenever required.

That is easier said than done, isn’t it? You know what you have to do but how should you go about it? Here are a few steps that might help you:

  1. Initially, you must focus on building trust. You can do that by listening. Trust is the ability to believe that others will care for what you care about and vice versa. Trust forms the bedrock of all relationships including the one that you have with your child. To provide a supportive and nurturing environment to your child, you need to lend a listening ear. Whether your child is talking about a soccer match or studies or a friend, first try to listen to them instead of launching into analysis or criticism or advice. Often during struggles, all a child wants to do is be heard and feel validated in their emotions.
  2. Do respect your child’s privacy. Do not force them to talk when they do not want to. Let them come to you and be ready to listen when they start to open up. Prying and forces may have an unintended adverse effect.
  3. While everybody is more or less aware of gestures of affection, young adults often are ignorant or unsure about the signs of abuse. Discuss these signs with them and guide them on how to handle the situation if such an unfortunate event happens to or in front of them.
  4. If you do realize that your child is in a relationship and may get physical, you need to explain the risks and precautions to them in clear terms. If you are worried about your kid’s health owing to similar reasons, first consult your doctor, and if need be, get some tests done.
